CEUL031621 – Palmetto Health USC Ortho ITA: Special Concerns of Concussive Injury
1)   Course Description
a.   On Wednesday, April 24th the PHUSC Orthopedics Education Committee will host it’s next Ortho ITA: Special Concerns of Concussive Injury. This event is focused on the comorbidities often seen in concussive injury and various recognition and rehabilitation techniques that can be utilized in the care of patients. This course is aimed at both psychological and vestibular aspects of concussion care and recovery, providing strategies that occupational therapists, physical therapists, and certified athletic trainers can incorporate into their practices.
2)   Dr. Harbin Course Objectives:
a.   After my presentation attendees will:
i.   Have a better understanding of why staying vigilant to undiagnosed mTBI is so important
ii.   Better understand risk factors for more prolonged and complicated recoveries from mTBI
iii.   Have a better understanding of the types of cognitive changes often seen after a concussion and how they typically manifest themselves (and are reported by patients)
iv.   Have a better understanding of the types of emotional changes often seen after a concussion and how they typically manifest themselves (and are reported by patients)
v.   Develop new interviewing skills to assess psychological variables
vi.   Have new online and national resources to stay current on this rapidly evolving field
3)   Mrs. Gleissner:
a.   Updated Course Outline
i.   The audience will:
ii.   1. Be able to report how Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Training is involved in a multi-disciplinary concussion rehab team.
iii.   2. Recognize potential patient occupations (roles) that could be affected by a concussion.
iv.   3. Identify at least three different compensatory strategies that are useful in rehabilitating patient occupations.
v.   4. List pre-existing conditions that are screened for during evaluation that may indicate the patient may need additional testing or access to a mental health professional as trajectory of care will could be longer.
vi.   5. List different referrals therapy-based healthcare professionals periodically initiate to ensure holistic care of patients.
