Inter-professional conference on amputee rehabilitation.
Everyday, more than 500 individuals in the United States undergo amputation and there are more than two million people in the United States living with upper or lower limb loss1. It is projected that there will be 3.6 million people living with upper or lower limb loss in the U.S. by 20502 . The Veterans Health Administration provides about 5,000 amputations of the lower limb a year, representing over 8 percent of all amputations in US males3.
Within five years of military separation, 99% of Service Members with combat-related amputations had transitioned their care to the VA4. The total number of Veterans with amputations being seen at VA facilities increased from 25,000 in fiscal year (FY) 2000 to almost 90,000 in FY 20165, although some of this growth can be attributed to an increased number of combat injuries, the majority resulted from chronic vascular diseases6.
The rehabilitation of veterans with limb loss requires a need of a multidisciplinary approach. The work of the team (Primary Care, Rehab Medicine, Prosthetist, PT/OT) plays a role in terms of medical, psychomotivational and technical skills support offered to the amputee during treatment.
This symposium will present the unique needs and update participants on the required specialized management with an interdisciplinary team approach and care coordination across the continuum of care to facilitate optimal outcomes.
