Course Description:

Plagiocephaly is prevalent in the infant population treated by pediatric therapists, especially for those infants with a diagnosis of torticollis. An atypical head shape can be the result of post-partum positional preference associated with a neck muscle imbalance like torticollis, intrauterine positioning or a bony anomaly like craniosynostosis. It is an essential part of the pediatric therapist’s skill set to identify and evaluate impairments of an infant’s head shape and neck to determine the best course of treatment.

This course will instruct participants in the assessment of an infant head shape including identifying complex components associated with torticollis, craniosynostosis or an inuterine etiology. Instruction will be given on how to screen for torticollis to identify neck motion and strength impairments. The method of performing anthropometric cranial measurements will be discussed as well as the limitations in solely applying linear measurements to a head shape to develop a plan of care. Treatment options discussed will include repositioning techniques and family education, torticollis treatment based on best available evidence and cranial remolding treatment. Finally, case studies with various presentations will guide participants through correct assessment and creation of a successful and comprehensive plan of care.

The abnormal infant head shape is a growing component of the pediatric therapy world. This course is designed to provide pediatric therapists with the tools and knowledge to feel confident in evaluating the infant head and neck and in developing a successful course of treatment.
