Topics in Seating, Mobility and Adaptive Equipment: Complex Rehab Equipment Evaluations
Learning Objectives by section:
Who’s the Team?
Objectives:
• List various individuals who might be involved in completing a wheelchair/seating evaluation and making recommendations for a successful outcome.
• Identify important contributions each team member may provide before, during and after the wheelchair/seating evaluation.
• Discuss possible interventions that will assist patients with achieving their functional mobility goal.
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Common Postural Deformities
Objectives:
• Identify common postural deformities and how they can impact daily function and mobility
• Learn how to evaluate for postural deformities and how to address with seating and positioning
• Be able to compare neutral sitting posture to various postural asymmetries in order to determine best seating and positioning interventions
Complex Rehab Wheelchair/Seating Evaluation
Session Objectives
• Obtaining comprehensive and relevant patient history
• Review of home and transportation accessibility and constraints of wheelchair prescription
• Consideration of postural deformities and application to seating system
• Demonstrate proficient mat evaluation skills to include supine and sitting
• Understanding of a functional mobility algorithm as it relates to equipment selection and defense
Wheelchair Mobility Training
Session Objectives:
• Evaluate shoulder position and mechanics during manual wheelchair propulsion to assess for shoulder complex repetitive stress trauma risk
• Apply components of proximal stabilization to optimize manual or power mobility skills
• Investigate current literature on propulsion and/or driving strategies for motor learning
• Review available alternate drive controls and equip the participant with skills necessary to identify when to contact a manufacturer’s representative or ATP for trials of complex alternate controls
Documentation Requirements to Obtain Mobility Equipment
Session Objectives:
• To identify at least three Medicare requirements for obtaining Mobility Assistive Equipment
• To know how to apply requirements of Medicare into your documentation process
• To understand the necessary forms and process for Medicaid/ CSHCS and other Medicaid HMO’s for Complex Seating Systems and Mobility Devices
• To identify the process and timeline of appeals and addendums to Medicare/Medicaid
Meet the Manufacturers
Objectives:
1. Identify at least 2 types of manual wheelchair frames and why they may be selected for a particular individual.
2. Identify at least 2 power wheelchair bases and why they may be selected for a particular individual.
3. Discuss the features of at least 2 wheelchair cushions and why they may be selected for a particular individual.
4. Discuss the features of at least 2 wheelchair backrests and why they may be selected for a particular individual.
