Course Description:

Individuals living with behavioral and mental health illness often have co-existing health conditions which can be addressed by Therapy. The focus of their plan is focused on recovery as a long-term process, with the ultimate goal being full participation in community activities. The purpose of a Behavioral and Mental Health Management Program is to provide clients with a secondary diagnosis of behavioral and mental illness the opportunity to achieve and maintain their highest level of function. Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the world. Most people in nursing homes have chronic physical illness or have failed to recover from injuries. Yet at least 50% of this population has co-occurring mental illnesses—especially dementia, depression, and anxiety disorders. The purpose of Physical Therapy is to increase an individual’s ability to live as independently as possible in the community while engaging in meaningful and productive life roles. Because therapy facilitates participation and is client-centered, it plays an important role in the success of those living with behavioral and mental health concerns in the community. By attending this course, PTs will gain a better understanding of how to create an excellent plan of care for their patients living with behavioral and mental illness. This seminar will review the background and scope of behavioral and mental illness. Finally, associated reimbursement and documentation principles will be discussed so PTs can be proficient in these areas.
