Course Description:

This seminar provides a detailed review of treatment considerations related to lower extremity amputations. Detailed description of program goals, the role of PT in an amputation program, and outcome measures are reviewed. The comprehensive evaluation is reviewed as well as treatment considerations by amputation type. Specific and detailed descriptions of interventions and handling techniques for facilitating movement are offered. Step-by-step instructions are given for facilitating turns to the sound and involved side, transfers, and bed mobility. Pre-gait activities such as weight shifting and base of support control are reviewed. Gait training activities and advanced gait activities including assistive device selection, stairs, curbs, ramps, incline, and floor transfers are reviewed. Residual limb care strategies are reviewed including pain management techniques, techniques for phantom limb pain, desensitization techniques, scar management, limb wrapping, and application of the stump shrinker. Video clips are utilized to reinforce strategies and techniques described.
Documentation and billing guidelines are reviewed. Therapists are directed to address the patient holistically taking into consideration goals for community re-entry and discharge
planning. Pre-requisite knowledge of amputation levels and prosthetic types is necessary.
