Course Description:
Speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses often work with clients suffering from traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents, or dementia. These conditions are frequently accompanied by confabulation, which may interfere with obtaining clients’ cooperation for nursing care and rehabilitation. The manner in which confabulatory behavior is managed can impact patient behavior. A specific approach may be appropriate for some individuals who confabulate, but may be ineffective or even counterproductive for others. Healthcare providers and caregivers may benefit from understanding the different types of confabulations, the situations in which they may occur, and how to manage them effectively.
The goal of this course is to inform speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses with knowledge of interdisciplinary assessments and interventions for confabulation.
