Course Description:

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has been shown to improve symptoms, functional capacity, and health-related quality of life, as well as decrease healthcare costs and readmission rates for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emerging evidence also supports PR for patients with other chronic respiratory disease; however, at this time Medicare provides coverage for PR only for patients with COPD. Medicare does provide coverage for similar services for patients with chronic respiratory disease other than COPD as part of respiratory services (RS). Any professional providing PR or other RS must have at least a basic understanding of the eligibility and reimbursement requirements for the services. This course provides a basic overview of PR and RS, including the formal outpatient programs and a plan for long-term maintenance of the benefits gained; reimbursement guidelines under Medicare and other payer sources, including eligibility criteria for these services; and billing requirements.

The goal of this educational program is to provide RT, PT, OT, and nursing professionals with information on developing pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory services programs and the regulatory requirements.
