Course Description:
While differing manual therapy techniques have existed for centuries, myofascial release (MFR) is an increasingly popular term for a specific manual therapy intervention to address subacute and chronic pain caused by fascial restrictions. MFR is based on the idea that restrictions of the muscular and fascial systems contribute to impaired range of motion, tension, and pain. This intervention is often associated with the assessment and treatment of “trigger points”. While research regarding the diagnosis and treatment of trigger points and fascial restrictions remains limited and controversial, there is a loyal following of practitioners that swear by its effectiveness as a treatment adjunct. In addition, self-MFR techniques have been gaining favor and an increasing number of studies have looked at the efficacy of these exercises. Due to the nature of the current body of research, it is still unclear whether MFR has any lasting effects. This course will look at current evidence surrounding myofascial release and manipulation.
