Course Description:
The advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in the 1990s has increased the life expectancy of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV). With proper management, HIV is now considered a chronic condition, which can include comorbidities of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary impairments. Across all clinical settings and in populations of every age, PTs, OTs and SLPs will increasingly encounter PLHIV in varying stages of the illness. Rehabilitation therapy will play an increasingly important role in improving quality of life for this unique patient population. In this webinar entitled, we will briefly review the epidemiology and disease process and discuss how HIV and AIDS affect the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary systems. We will then discuss specific rehabilitation treatment-based interventions for common HIV-related impairments seen in this population.
