Course Description:
Limb amputation can have a profound effect on a person's quality of life and daily function. It can lead to body-image and self-esteem issues and increased dependence on others. Limb amputation also frequently leads to significant time away from work or possible inability to continue working (Craig, Hill, Englehart, & Adisesh, 2017). Physical and occupational therapy professionals are critical members of the healthcare team responsible for caring for patients after amputation. This course highlights the role of therapy professionals in upper extremity (UE) post-surgical care, pre-prosthetic training, and prosthetic training. Types of prosthetic devices and current technology will be reviewed. Learners will develop an understanding of the treatment considerations throughout the stages of rehabilitation, including key components of assessment and treatment to enable the person to return to maximum functional level using upper extremity prosthetic devices.
