Course Description:
Dealing with refusals in the clinical setting can be a challenge, particularly in settings such as SNF and IRF where therapists may feel pressure to treat a minimum number of minutes with each patient. Knowing what is within the patient's rights is vital, but it is also important to know when/if it is appropriate to use persuasion, inducements, and other forms of treatment pressure. It can be possible to prevent refusals in the first place, through education and relationship-building. Refusals not only cost facilities and practices time and money, they also limit access to patient care and can negatively affect future outcomes and access to resources.
