Course Description:
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by abnormal tissue and neurogenic inflammation that can amplify and spread pain while sensorimotor, vasomotor, or sudomotor changes occur. Healthcare professionals need to identify these patients early, when the condition is most effectively treated. Diagnosis is based on the patient’s history and clinical presentation, requiring a thorough multisystem assessment that rules out other diagnoses. Multimodal therapy directed at presenting signs and maximizing functioning can slow disease progression and debilitating complications. A review of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and complications of CRPS type 1 including its effect on biopsychosocial functioning is presented.
