Course Description:
In the presence of ever-increasing demands imposed by modern curricula students are pressed to remember more information, techniques and processes. The ability to apply knowledge in novel situations is a skill that is in demand in school and in the world beyond school. These abilities require well developed executive functions for success. Time available for related arts such as art, music and gym are compromised in favor of learning technical skills and the use of electronic devices. The important role of movement in learning has been well documented and yet students are often encouraged to sit still and listen for longer periods of time, particularly as they progress through grade levels. The effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic have served to increase sedentary lifestyles and screen time. This workshop will highlight the relationship between movement and thinking skills. The foundations of this relationship will be reviewed as well as activities for remediation of school based challenges.
