Course Description:
Osteoporosis, the most common metabolic bone disorder, is characterized by compromised bone mass and strength that predisposes affected people to an increased risk for fractures. The disease occurs when the rate of bone loss (resorption) is greater than the rate of bone formation. This results in decreased bone mass as the disease progresses, which causes the bones to become fragile. Fragile bones are more prone to fracture, even from normal activities such as lifting and bending. The goal of this course is to educate nurses and physical therapists in the acute setting on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
