Course Description:

Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO) are devices that are worn on the distal part of the lower extremity to assist with alignment of the ankle and foot, restore normal function, and prevent further progression of abnormal biomechanical processes. The use of AFOs, in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions, have been well-documented and commonly seen in many rehabilitation settings. Therefore, clinicians should be able to conduct thorough evaluations to determine patients’ appropriateness for AFO prescriptions, as well as familiarize themselves with various types of AFOs, their application to several neuromuscular conditions (e.g., Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, stroke, and spinal cord injury), and rehabilitation strategies to enhance functional outcomes with the new AFO. In this course, attendees will be able to state common goals and indications for AFOs as well as understand how the patient’s condition may affect the orthotic prescription. Lastly, attendees will be familiar with methods in which to evaluate, prescribe, and assess the effects of AFOs on gait and function.
