Course Description:
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) disruption leads to complex changes in the neuromuscular system that can affect recovery in profound ways. We know that strength, balance, and explosive movements are important components in ACL rehabilitation, but what role does the brain play in our rehab process? In this course we look to examine the neurological and histological impact of an ACL injury and the subsequent compensations that the brain makes during the recovery process. After identifying these impairments, we look to demonstrate early stage management strategies to minimize the negative neuroplastic changes and expedite the process toward return to sport. After addressing acute management, we will teach strategies for late stage rehabilitation, utilizing open reaction, visual disturbance, and task distraction methods that are simple and cost effective. Through this process we will discuss and identify preventative strategies that can be employed from a neuroplasticity standpoint to minimize risk of ACL injury.
