Course Description:
The benefits of yoga are known across a wide range of age and ethnic groups around the world. This course, co-authored by a yoga specialist and a Physical Therapist, has an aim of integrating the therapeutic benefits of yoga into the skill and practice of Physical Therapy intervention. The authors explain in detail how yoga positively affects daily life (whether participating in the mundane of life activities, work, sports, or exercise) to prevent or reduce risk of injury, pain and falls. This course addresses basic anatomy including the skeletal, muscle, neurological, sensory and proprioceptive systems and discusses how each system is positively affected through the multiple poses presented. One of the many strengths of this course is the multiple options presented for the various poses from which the therapist can make adaptations depending on the goal--mobility (combination of flexibility, motor control, and stability), strengthening, balance, or recovery (support during illness or injury with the use of props). Instructions on how to prevent injuries while practicing yoga are included. This course includes the book entitled Yoga Therapy by Butera and Elgelid.
