Course Description:

This course addresses the most current research about neuroplasticity with a patient-centered focus. Movement experiences are created and modified by therapists in order to drive the process of neuroplasticity. In addition to the neurophysiological adaptations that occur, many psycho-emotional and behavioral factors impact motor learning and recovery. Patient-centered rehabilitation, based on factors such as autonomy, self-efficacy, attention, salience and confidence, has been shown to play a crucial role in improving functional outcomes. This course instructs the reader in what takes place within the central and peripheral nervous systems when neuroplastic adaptations occur. The topics of self-practice (the home program), patient compliance, caregiver support, different models of feedback, and more are discussed in detail to gain an appreciation for their contribution to functional recovery. Several case studies are included to apply these concepts in actual patient situations. This is an excellent course for therapists working in neuro rehab, as well as home health, geriatrics, or orthopedics with or without a neurological co-morbidity.
