Course Description:
Bones are the internal framework of our body. Without our skeletal structure, we would be unable to stand upright and walk on two legs. Bones continually go through a remodeling process in order to maintain normal bone mass. However, when this process is disrupted, osteoporosis or osteopenia may occur. Currently, there are ways to prevent a decrease in bone mass but there is no known cure for osteoporosis. The purpose of an Osteoporosis and Bone Health program is to provide our aging clients and clients living with osteoporosis and osteopenia the opportunity to achieve optimal bone health and maintain their highest level of function.
Approximately, 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass. By 2025, experts predict that osteoporosis will be responsible for approximately three million fractures and $25.3 billion in costs annually. There are ways to prevent a decrease in bone mass but there is no known cure for osteoporosis. As a result, Physical Therapists must be prepared to help prevent the disease from occurring, manage the symptoms and increase the functional ability in this client population. This seminar will prepare Physical Therapists to develop an effective plan of care and interventions for clients living with osteoporosis.
