Course Description:
Teaching our patients how to safely get up from the floor is one of the most important things we can do. Who is appropriate for this type of intervention? What can we learn from a patient's ability to master this skill? In this podcast course, we discuss evidence-based perspectives on rising from the floor in older adults from examination and intervention perspectives along the ICF and patient management trajectories. The Supine to Stand Test and outcome measures with concurrent validity will be reviewed. Factors associated with floor transfers are discussed, including physical function, fall history, assistive device use, and balance confidence. Comprehensive interventions are reviewed, including exercise interventions and functional mobility training. Finally, the discussion highlights community-based programs that target floor rise activities among older adults and their resource availability to physical and occupational therapy professionals nationally.
