Course Description:
Conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play - collectively referred to as social determinants of health - strongly influence the health of a community including who gets sick in the first place. Despite a large and compelling body of evidence indicating that social factors apart from medical care shape health, most rehabilitation clinicians have not addressed these crucial structural factors in their practice. Rehabilitation clinicians have a responsibility to advocate to reduce health disparities and health care inequities. Thus, understanding the social determinants and knowing how to address them with individual patients/clients and clinical populations can produce societal transformation that can lead to healthy people. This course will provide you with actionable strategies to address social determinants of health at the individual and clinic level.
