Course Description:
A significant increase in the understanding of the physiology (normal processes) and pathophysiology (abnormal processes) of wound healing has occurred in recent years. This understanding has revealed that normal wound healing requires a complex and orderly sequence of actions. Each level of this sequence is marked by the presence of specific components and mediators. These components and mediators are influenced by and/or composed of vascular, lymphatic, interstitial, endocrine, cellular and subcellular factors. Given the high degree of intricacy involved, there are numerous possibilities for disruption. Disruptions can result in the development of chronic wounds. A variety of disease processes increase the risk for disruption. The pathophysiologic processes of the primary diseases affecting wound healing will be discussed.
It is essential that members of the wound care team understand both the physiology and pathophysiology of wound healing. This understanding will enable members to better determine the etiology of chronic wounds, develop specific treatment plans, and effectively educate patients and caregivers. To enhance participant understanding, the course utilizes interactive reviews and scenarios as well as examples of therapies, interventions, and patient education based on specific pathophysiological processes.
