Course Description:
Occupational health has historically focused on rehabilitating injured workers…and yet, workers across the lifespan have demands that impact their ability to engage in worker roles. As physical therapists, we often work within our “silos”: cardiopulmonary, neurologic, orthopedic, pediatrics... Physical therapists engaging in occupational health roles frequently come from orthopedic backgrounds and yet, these work focused needs exist for individuals across any diagnosis or impairment including neurologic, cardiopulmonary, oncologic, and developmental disabilities. To engage fully in these roles we must understand the laws that impact worker participation; ergonomics (understanding tools, processes, physical demands); worker assessment (pediatric through adult); and education to support the participation and health of workers and their caregivers across the lifespan within contemporary therapy models. In this interactive presentation, we will take a deep dive into defining, describing and applying these roles across practice settings.
