Course Description:
Physical therapy providers are often not exposed to certain demographics until in they find themselves in the clinic, usually when are distressed by an illness or injury. These limited experiences can feed into biases they may have. According to Hoffman, Trawalter, Axt, & Oliver, recent work suggests that racial bias in pain treatment may stem, in part, from racial bias in perceptions of others’ pain (2016). These biases can impact our perception, judgement, and actions which ultimately could negatively impact our client’s health outcomes. There are various intersectionalities of bias, in addition to race, that healthcare practitioners are not aware of which influence their delivery of care. This introductory course on implicit bias will cover the historical basis and present consequences of implicit bias while exploring strategies to minimize the influence of bias in physical therapy to ultimately improve the delivery of healthcare services.
