Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of what pain is and why we have it, along with evidence-based strategies on how to use pain neuroscience education to improve patient outcomes. As clinicians, we need to understand how to explain complex ideas in patient-appropriate language that does not increase fear or anxiety. This is why we teach the use of metaphors and stories to help nudge the patient in the right direction, depending on their readiness to make a behavior change. We will also dive into neurodynamics (movement of the nervous system) and how to treat a sensitive nerve. We will finish by discussing strategies to talk a patient down from the "osteoarthritis/disc pathology cliff" (when the patient is fixated on these issues and ignoring everything else that can improve their pain and function). Participants will walk away from this course with the ability to immediately apply the information, elevating their approach to treating patients with pain.
