Course Description:

This online video course provides learners with an introduction to integrative oncology, wellness coaching, resilience, reflection and restoration for the healthcare provider, and critical allyship for optimizing patient and self-care in a changing healthcare landscape. Modules on integrative oncology will introduce multiple topics: the work of the NIH NCI OCCAM, the NCCIH and SIO, all national research organizations which encourage rigorous scientific evaluation of both pre-clinical and clinical science, while advocating for the transformation of oncology care to integrate evidence-based complementary approaches; holistic approaches to mitigate side effects of treatment as an integral part of cancer rehabilitation; the use of yoga, tai chi, Reiki, reflections through journaling and biological based interventions, such as mind-body evidence-based interventions that are accessible and should be part of standard cancer care for all patients across the cancer continuum. The wellness coaching module highlights various aspects of health and wellness coaching and provides clinicians ways to include motivational interviewing and decisional balance strategies in addition to measuring self-efficacy into clinical practice for sustainable change. Caring for the Caregiver modules address the following topics: evidence that physical and emotional well-being of clinicians treating cancer survivors is critical to deliver best practices; various tools for assessing resilience and developing strategies to mitigate stress and reduce burnout; and various experiential exercises including a 3-minute body scan, the use of the breath alongside mindful movement practices and short but powerful strategies throughout daily patient and self-care. Finally, the critical allyship module presents an overview of the tenets of Healthy People through the decades and questions if we achieved our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participants will learn about Critical Allyship through a two-sided coin model developed by Stephanie Nixon (2019) which illuminates perspective from a unique lens. This module is intended as a first step for self-reflection and action on behalf of each clinical setting within a larger organizational context. Learner understanding will be assessed using post-course multiple choice quizzes and case-based discussions in the Foundations of Cancer Rehabilitation II live course.
