Course Description:

Balneotherapy is the use of thermal mineral baths to reduce pain and improve the sense of well-being. The theoretical rationale for its use is that balneotherapy might generate mechanical, chemical, and physical effects and can lead to hyperthermia, improved circulation, and muscle relaxation. Inflammation might be decreased via an increase in the activity of the lymphatic system and stimulation of the immune system. It is thought that chemical effects can be produced by the absorption of mineral salts and gaseous compounds through the skin, causing vasodilation and hyperemia. Immersion can reduce loading on joints, and hydrostatic pressure can reduce peripheral edema. There are no clear evidence-based guidelines for the selection of methods or protocols for application of balneotherapy. Water content, temperature, application techniques, and duration of treatment vary in the literature. Water with a mineral content of at least 1 g/L is used. Natural spring water can contain sodium, bicarbonate, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum, chlorine, and metasilicate. Thermal mineral water from natural springs is approximately 34°C. The most commonly reported uses of balneotherapyfor musculoskeletal conditions are for low back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
