Course Description:

A tilt table is a padded table that tilts from a horizontal to a vertical position that is used to provide early weight-bearing and upright positioning experiences for patients unable to stand on their own. It is also used for reconditioning patients with orthostatic hypotension due to conditions such as stroke and spinal cord injury or prolonged immobilization. In the intensive care unit (ICU) setting, tilt tables are commonly used to increase arousal and to minimize adverse effects of immobilization, including orthostatic hypotension, venous pooling, reduced lung volumes, muscle atrophy, joint contractures, peripheral nerve injuries, and pressure sore development. Upright posture is also thought to be beneficial for maintenance of postural reflexes, enhancement of bladder and bowel function, and psychological well-being and is the first stage in mobility recovery. Tilt tables with integrated stepping capabilities have been reported to facilitate the transition to standing and stepping in a safe and efficient manner. Patients are typically progressed with caution by increasing the angle of inclination and the duration of the tilt. In patients with orthostatic hypotension there is a risk of loss of consciousness if the angle of inclination or the duration of use is too great.
