Course Description:

Modalities should be carefully selected for their intended effect to enhance functional recovery.
This course includes the text Michlovitz’s Modalities for Therapeutic Intervention, 7th edition
(2022), which uses the latest research available to provide the therapist with the underlying
rationale for selecting a therapeutic modality to be included in a therapy plan based on the known
physiologic and physical effects of the agent, the safety and use of the agent, and the therapeutic
goals. This course covers a wide range of therapeutic agents: cryotherapy, thermotherapy,
ultrasound, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, low-level laser, diathermy, traction, pneumatic
compression, and alternative modalities. The importance of modalities as they pertain to
treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, pain symptoms, and promotion of tissue
