Course Description:
PT and OT clinicians face more challenges than ever before, including a worldwide pain
epidemic and skepticism among critics about the efficacy of hands-on treatment techniques. This
course, based on the book Integrating Manual Therapy and Pain Neuroscience: Twelve
Principles for Treating the Body and the Brain, updates our understanding of pain neuroscience
and manual therapy with current research evidence, as it examines ways to improve outcomes
with patients. Written by four renowned physical therapists and pain neuroscientists—Adriaan
Louw, Emilio Puentedura, Stephen Schmidt, and Kory Zimney—the book provides techniques to
help practitioners successfully meet the many challenges inherent in treating patients whose
presentation includes some level of pain or fear of movement.
The book uses 12 principles of treatment to show how specific therapeutic concepts can
powerfully influence the outcome of therapy interventions, including hands-on techniques.
