Course Description:

Advances in assistive technology over the past 10 years have positively impacted the lives of individuals diagnosed with dementia. In this course, you will learn how technology can assist people with dementia to live safer and longer in their own homes and community, allowing them to engage in meaningful activities, while vastly improving their quality of life. This course discusses how dementia is diagnosed, the role of the rehab professional, and introduces assessment tools for the therapist. Assistive technologies that work to maximize cognition (orientation, memory, organization), mobility, as well as physical, social, and visual needs are explored, as well as the concept of the “Cyber Senior” and the power of music. Video clips and case studies enhance this course and are used to further clarify how the use of technology can truly benefit those living with dementia. Future concepts of how our aging population can flourish rather than struggle is a key concept that is emphasized in this valuable and comprehensive course for both PT and OT clinicians. This is a must course for all rehab therapists working in geriatrics!
