Course Description:
Ankle-foot orthotics (AFOs) are a common intervention to enhance ambulation post-stroke. However, they are only effective if the right AFO is prescribed at the right time to the right patient to facilitate and normalize closed chain biomechanics. Unfortunately, there are many myths within the world of physical therapy about what AFOs can and cannot do. This discussion presents evidence to debunk these myths and models how to use information in the AFO clinical practice guideline as a framework for clinical decision-making when determining if your patient is appropriate and will benefit from an AFO.
