Course Description:
Options for wheelchair prescription have significantly evolved over the past few decades in order to meet the needs of various patient presentations. Seating and mobility is considered to be a niche area within physical therapy practice that has a life altering effect on patients’ physical and emotional wellness, functional independence, and overall quality of life. When selected appropriately, wheelchairs have the potential to maximize function, participation, and accessibility without sacrificing other aspects of daily living. Due to the impactfulness of wheelchair prescription, clinicians should have a thorough understanding of the types of wheelchairs that are available as well as the multifaceted approach to wheelchair prescription. Lastly, physical therapists and assistants should be aware of clinical implications and considerations that may affect patients’ health and functional outcomes. Upon completion of this course, clinicians will have an in-depth understanding of the types of manual and power wheelchairs that are available for patients of varying health conditions and impairments as well as gain knowledge regarding key components of wheelchair prescription, seating, and mobility needs.
