CEUL106258 - Osteoarthritis of the First CMC Joint: What a Pain in the Thumb!

Offered By

, AR  Albania

Course Description:

We tend to take our thumbs for granted; that is, until they hurt. With an injury or loss of use of
a thumb, there is a 20% loss of ability to perform normal activities such as opening lids, tying shoes, and
even shaking someone’s hand. A painful thumb restricts a person’s independence. Osteoarthritis (OA)
of the thumb, specifically of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, is a common cause of pain and
functional limitations. Because there is no cure for arthritis, the primary treatment is patient
education. This module outlines techniques for physical and occupational therapy professionals to
employ to manage symptoms and perhaps slow the progression of joint changes.

The goal of this educational program is to provide PT and OT professionals with information about
the pathophysiology, incidence, treatment options, and postoperative management of first CMC joint OA.
