Course Description:
Due to the high prevalence of strokes in the United States, there is a high need of integration and collaboration in the provision of Speech Pathology Services for stroke patients. Integrated MD, RN, Physical, Occupational, Speech, and Social Work/Case Manager services is best practice for a primary or comprehensive stroke center. Speech Pathologists involvement with acute stroke patients is paramount to initiate evaluations and course of treatment at the time of admission to the hospital, hopefully on the acute neuro unit. Collaboration and communication with the rehabilitation team are key for patient centered care. An integrated team approach helps to decide if a patient can tolerate an intense inpatient rehabilitation program, skilled nursing facility, or home with home health/outpatient therapy. Speech Pathologists are highly suited to educate patients and their families regarding communication, cognition, and swallowing status post stroke.
