Course Description:
Spirometry is a clinical tool used to assess, diagnose, monitor, and characterize the degree of
abnormality of lung function. It can be performed in a variety of clinical settings and for a
variety of clinical reasons. However, in order to achieve accurate and reliable results the operator
must learn the essential skills required to elicit an acceptable test. The operators may come from
a variety of health care professions, which may include but are not limited to, respiratory
therapists, nurses, physical therapists, medical assistants, and many others. Part I will address the
clinical indications for using this clinical tool, the basic values obtained, and the calibration of
the instrument prior to testing the subject. It includes, through demonstration, the key elements
needed to assure the device is operating properly.
