Course Description:
Elbow fractures involve the distal humerus, head of proximal radius (i.e., radial head), and/or olecranon process of the proximal ulna. Like most fractures, elbow fractures are classified as closed or open, as nondisplaced or displaced, and by the bones involved. Closed, nondisplaced fractures with intact elbow mechanism are often treated nonoperatively, whereas surgical fixation is required for displaced fractures with impaired joint function. General management includes short-term (3 to 10 days) immobilization, usually in elbow flexion, with instructions for protection and mobilization. Desired outcomes of supervised rehabilitation are restored range of motion (ROM), upper-extremity strength, and overall elbow function for the performance of ADLs. The restoration of joint mobility in early rehabilitation after elbow fracture should not compromise joint stability. Practitioners should be aware of potential complications, conditions to rule out, and typical prognosis. Patient education is necessary for safe return to prior work or sport.
