Course Description:
A triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear is an injury to the ulnar side of the wrist that results from either trauma (e.g., fall/collision on outstretched hand(FOOSH) or a traction injury) or degeneration (e.g., age related or from repetitive loading). Typical complaints include ulnar-sided pain that might or might not be relieved by rest, a clicking or snapping sensation with movement or activity, pain with gripping, wrist deviation, forearm rotation, and a subjective sense of instability. Onset can be insidious or acute. The TFCC consists of a relatively avascular central disk, a meniscal homologue, several ligamentous components, and a portion of the extensor carpiulnaris (ECU) sheath. Depending on the nature of the tear and the functional demands of the patient, treatment might include immobilization and/or rest followed by rehabilitation or surgical debridement or repair. Expected outcomes include reduction or elimination of pain, weakness, and related symptoms, usually accompanied by a return to full function. Some modification of activity might be required.
