Course Description:

This course provides learners with a concise introduction to elemental conversational and
medical Spanish. It is designed for health professionals at all levels, and utilizes low-pressure,
incremental acquisition learning strategies. The course includes a basic review of fundamental
rules of grammar, followed by introduction of conversational words and phrases used by
clinicians to greet, intake, treat and conclude professional interactions with Hispanic patients
having limited English proficiency. Roleplay exercises with a native Spanish speaker include
ambulation with assistive devices (crutches and walker), appointment cancellation, pain
evaluation and coronavirus dialogue. Useful words and phrases are collected in an easy-to-use
two-way glossary for ready later reference.
