Course Description:
Welcome to this course on Physical Therapy: Strength Training for Older Adults. Aging is a natural, inevitable process that affects the whole body and impacts all people who live to an advanced age. The most effective intervention for older adults experiencing this process is exercise. When older adults participate in strength training correctly, these exercises are very safe and are shown to be an effective tool used by physical therapy professionals to promote successful aging. The normal changes that occur during the aging process must be considered if a physical therapy professional is going to design an appropriate strengthen training program for older adults, for both the healthy, active older adult as well as those who become sarcopenic, frail, or suffer from a pathology. This course discusses the aging process, how strength training is used to offset the aging process, and how physical therapy professionals can positively impact the quality of life for older adults by implementing strength training into their routines.
Please note: This continuing education/professional development activity was planned for physical therapists and physical therapy assistants. Completing this course does not authorize you to add any skill discussed in the content to your practice if this function is not included in your current scope of practice.
