Course Description:
In this one-day course, participants will briefly review the basics of anatomy and biomechanics of the Temporomandibular joint. We will focus most of the time on evaluation and treatment skills including use of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD). This is a heavily hands-on/lab-focused course, and participants will be expected to come in prepared with basic knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics of the TMJ ahead of time. The instructor will provide recommended resources for this to the host. This course is designed to give providers the tools to identify the major diagnostic categories of temporomandibular disorders including myofascial pain, disc disorders, headaches, joint disorders, and the relationship between the cervical spine and the TMJs. We will then apply treatment techniques that include home exercises, manual therapy techniques, lifestyle changes and learn about post-surgical management. We will conclude with some suggestions on how to collaborate with dentists to provide the most optimal multi-disciplinary care for these patients.
