Course Description:
Biofeedback is augmented feedback of biological or biomechanical signals that enables a person to identify and modify bodily functions of which he or she is usually unaware. The feedback can be concurrent or terminal (i.e., during or after the bodily function), and in rehabilitation is predominantly used for neuromuscular reeducation. Biofeedback can provide knowledge of performance or knowledge of results. Knowledge of performance is information about movement characteristics that contributed to a particular performance outcome. Knowledge of results is information presented to the learner about the outcome of a task or the achievement of a goal, including information about the magnitude and direction of any error. In neuromuscular reeducation, surface EMG biofeedback is generally used, although there are several other forms of biofeedback, including pressure biofeedback (manometry), positional biofeedback, pulse oximetry biofeedback, and force platform feedback for sway. In addition to neuromuscular education, biofeedback can be implemented in an effort to bring about a variety of outcomes such as adaptations in an individual’s behavior, relaxation, pain reduction, and better athletic performance.
