Course Description:
De Quervain’s syndrome is a painful condition involving the extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicislongus tendons in the first dorsal compartment at the radial wrist. Initially considered an inflammatory condition, it is now classified as a degenerative process absent of any inflammatory elements. Although trauma can be a cause, it is more likely to be caused by repetitive thumb use, gripping, or eccentric ulnar deviation activities (e.g., racquet sports, hammering, computer activities). Conservative care is the treatment of choice. This may include a corticosteroid injection, which has been supported by research to have favorable results in 1-2 weeks despite an unclear mechanism of efficacy.
