Course Description:
Hypertension is defined as persistent elevated arterial blood pressure (BP) and can occur idiopathically or as the result of another condition. BP measurements are classified into four categories: normal, prehypertension, stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension. There are many factors that increase the risk of hypertension, and hypertension itself is a risk factor for other diseases and conditions. Management of hypertension includes use of lifestyle modifications and antihypertensive medications, as indicated. A physical therapy evaluation of a patient with hypertension should include a detailed medical and personal history as well as an assessment of cardiopulmonary fitness. Physical therapy intervention for patients with hypertension will include patient education and a tailored exercise program.
