Course Description:
OSS is one of the most common orthopedic conditions which typically occurs during growth spurts in preadolescence and adolescence. It typically affects athletes; however, the diagnosis of OSS is exclusive to athletes. OSS occurs due to inflammation of the patellar tendon at the insertion site on the tibial tubercle. Prior to completing skeletal maturity, a secondary ossification center (apophysis) develops in the tibial tubercle. This period occurs in boys between the ages of 11 and 15 years and in girls between the ages of 8 and 13 years. The apophysis lacks the ability to withstand excessive tensile forces, resulting in significant pain that can be devastating to an active adolescent participating in sporting activities such as soccer, basketball, or any other activity involving jumping or cutting maneuvers. Standard treatment follows a conservative approach, including activity modification and physical therapy to address pain management, postural alignment, strength, and flexibility. In severe cases, knee immobilization and even surgery are considered. Typically, 90% of the cases resolve with nonoperative treatment.
