Course Description:
Plantar fasciosis is an overuse injury involving the plantar fascia, which attaches to the calcaneus on the plantar surface of the foot. Commonly known as plantar fasciitis, the term plantar fasciosis is more accurate because the condition is typically degenerative and chronic after the acute inflammatory phase. Prolonged walking, running, or other weight-bearing activities typically induce an excessive traction mechanism on the plantar fascia at its origin on the calcaneus. Many risk factors have been associated with this condition, but no single factor has yet been identified as a main contributor. To properly treat plantar fasciosis, a thorough evaluation, including shoe wear analysis and a foot exam should be performed. Because of the difficulty to effectively resolve plantar fasciosis, many conservative treatment options have been tried, ranging from manual therapy and therapeutic exercise to extracorporeal shock wave therapy.
