Course Description:

According to the Centers for Disease Control, diabetes affects more than 37 million American adults, and 96 million have prediabetes, putting them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Despite a growing number of interventions for the secondary prevention of diabetes, patients continue to struggle with persistent poor glycemic control and poor adherence to the prescribed diabetes management regimen. Considering the tremendous costs of diabetes to individuals and society, it is pressing to find effective ways to improve diabetes self-management and treatment adherence. Many healthcare professionals can bring value to the diabetes care team by evaluating multiple levels of influence on diabetes self-management, addressing personal and environmental barriers to well-being related to their disease, and supporting patients to develop highly complex competencies and skills to satisfactorily self-manage diabetes.
