Course Description:

We need to understand that cultural competency and implicit bias in healthcare is very alive and thriving in all healthcare systems, albeit silently. While we as clinicians may go about our day-to-day practice, offering consultations and treatments without considering biases, the reality is, these biases are negatively influencing our decision-making process. This 2 hour course aims to help clinicians to not only understand the complexities of diversity, equity, inclusion issues impacted by cultural competency and implicit biases; but it also offers practical steps we can implement to address this very salient yet deleterious issue in healthcare.
Do we even realize we do this in normal healthcare practice? Why should we be aware of it? How can we practice without having these biases?
Let Dr. Aditi Mehra, DHS, OTR/L walk us through some tips to navigate and become aware of cultural competency and implicit bias. We as healthcare professionals can and should do better!
Dr. Mehra will cover:
•   Define unconscious/implicit bias/cultural competency
•   List the process of how implicit bias develops
•   Recognize current research on implicit bias and cultural competency in the access to and delivery of health care services
•   Identify how cultural competency and implicit bias influences interactions with co-workers and clients
•   Identify intervention strategies to remedy the negative impact
•   List the present consequences of cultural competency and implicit bias based on an individual’s characteristics
