Course Description:
Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT) is a common idiopathic postural deformity that becomes evident shortly after birth. It is characterized by lateral flexion of the neck usually accompanied by rotation in the opposite direction, with or without flattening of the head. Infants with CMT are often referred to therapy to treat the asymmetries in position and movement that are present. Evidence shows that early intervention and therapy provided by physical therapists results in faster resolution than with parent exercises alone and is the first choice for conservative treatment of this condition.
This lecture course will provide therapists with knowledge of the Clinical Practice Guidelines developed by the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapists, which were updated in the summer of 2018. Types of infant torticollis and associated conditions such as plagiocephaly will be discussed, evidenced-based examination and intervention strategies will be described, and caregiver education and follow-up care recommendations will be reviewed. In addition, participants will be taught how to apply objective information to establish Grade of Severity and prognosis.
